The College QuandaryThe end of August often coincides with one of the most difficult and, often, important decisions in the life of every student: the choice of which college attend to. Choosing the right degree course is a judgment that will affect the future career of every student. Due to the significance of this vital decision, it is important to approach it with maturity and decisiveness that it commands.

Here are some tips on how to solve “The College Quandary”.

Know yourself:

In the words of Socrates "know thyself”, this rings true what embarking upon your final journey, your career path and furthering your education. Think, interrogate and define your goals. Think carefully about what you want, and what you want to be great at. Compare your attitudes and your inclinations with the provision of training that you have.

Often looking oneself objectively is a fantastic way of identifying what you really want, try using a mind map.

Start with the central theme of you; branch out with your interests and hobbies, what you enjoy about them and your strengths within that area. Make connections with potential professions where your hobbies overlap. From there you can dig deep and really understand what you would be good at and why you want to do it. Job satisfaction is a rarity these days, so give yourself the best chance!

Now, this is where you will need to apply yourself for a few days, once you have identified an area of opportunity, look at the various degree programmes to help you on your journey. Look at the various offering by each university, look at potentially moving, it’s your future after all. Look at the numerous guidelines, entry criteria, support, clubs and activities (very important). A well informed choice will put you in more fruitful path to success, at the very least you can’t say you didn’t know..

The internet is a fantastic resource to help you draw up a short-list, each individual college, university and institution will have its own website full of vital information. Why not look at forums? Forums are a great place to find interesting comments regarding institutions, of course these should always be viewed within a balanced light. For example if you are interested in nursing programmes within the California state – well, there is your search query, Google: “Nursing Schools in California” and you will find an absolute banquet of resources and information.

Do not be swayed:

When you are selecting the right academy, makes sure that it is you who is making the decision. Sure, take advice from your professor, peers and even parents, but it’s your decision. Don’t be swayed because a friend is going somewhere, this decision is a life changing one, and it is something that only “you” can decide.

Your life is what you make it, remember that.

Think about the future:

John, M. Richardson cited that “when it comes to the future, there are three kinds of people: those who let it happen, those who make it happen and those who wonder what happened”. I know where I am, but what about you? Be clear about your future and what you want to make of your-self, don’t let anything hold you back.
