A Kids Job – Learning Through Play
The Montessori education system places emphasis on playing to learn. Games figure largely in these classrooms. It raises a very important point about traditional education and the way it works. Why do so few people pay almost no attention to the idea of playing? Parents and teachers alike need to wake up to the potential they're squandering. It damages children to stick to conservative education methods.
The Philosophy of Playing GamesChildren in a Montessori classroom play games and interact in a more relaxed environment. To a supporter of traditional education it might not seem like education at all. There are two aspects of learning through games.
2. Enjoyment - Adults and children learn more from what they enjoy. Think back to a disliked subject. The head rests on the desk and the book remains firmly closed. Few people learn anything from this sort of environment.
Schools use a broader curriculum to teach. It allows pupils to make more choices in how they play and learn. By making students want to come to school, they're more likely to succeed.
The ImaginationChildren don't think like adults. The logical mind of an adult doesn't apply to a child. They have voices in their heads. They make characters and they can easily conjure up images out of nothing. This is the imagination in action. Few people within traditional education systems appreciate the power of the imagination. Children who daydream often get detention.
Montessori promotes the idea of daydreaming and being creative. It's not so much about playing. It's about being creative. Some children don't enjoy rampant movement and borderline hyperactivity. Their idea of playing involves thinking and drawing pictures. It's perfectly acceptable.
The imagination indicates a rampant mind. It's a mind which constantly thinks and looks for new perspectives. Play increases the rate of growth. It makes school and learning an attraction not a burden.
What about Academic Learning?Teaching through play will never mean a lack of academic learning. Children will learn more through mental and physical play than they will through reading a textbook. They cover the same amount of material. Students decide what they do instead. The capacity for work remains the same, but the type changes.
No evidence states children who learn under the montessori have a reduced level of knowledge. On the contrary, evidence showed the exact opposite. These children have better social skills and more creativity.
Learn Through PlayGovernments need to understand children don't have the same aspirations. They don't have the same skills. Education through play brings their potential to the surface much earlier. It enables them to pursue what they love at a younger age. This is vital for their direction as a teenager.
If they aren't nurtured at a young age, it can set them back years. Traditional education tends to force this to happen through its dogmatic approaches.
